UNESCO's International Jazz Day
April 30, 2015

In celebration of UNESCO's International Jazz Day, the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature presents “News from the Great Wide World: Ralph Ellison and the Cultural Ambassadors of Jazz,” an event that celebrates the intersection of jazz with the work of the writer Ralph Ellison. Horace Porter, F. Wendell Miller Professor of English & American Studies at the University of Iowa, will discuss Ellison's work.

Throughout the program, a jazz ensemble will perform songs composed or made famous by jazz artists who connected with Ellison, including Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Christian. The ensemble includes Damani Phillips (saxophone), James Dreier (drums), Blake Shaw (bass), and Grace Leong (piano) from the University of Iowa School of Music. Porter is the author of Jazz Country: Ralph Ellison in America, and the new Dreaming Out Loud: African American Novelists at Work, both from the University of Iowa Press.

The official program will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library. Music will be performed for 15 minutes before and after the program. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch. The City of Literature will provide drinks and dessert. The program will be aired live on the Library Channel, Iowa City cable channel 20, and will be broadcast live on KCCK Jazz 88.3 or at www.kcck.org. The event is co-presented by the University of Iowa School of Music and the Iowa City Public Library.

University of Iowa Museum of Art

The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) is dedicated to bringing art into the lives of people across Iowa. Despite losing the former museum building to the flood in 2008, the UIMA continues strive towards being ever present on the beautiful UI campus. In 2009, the Museum opened a on-campus space in the Iowa Memorial Union's third floor Richey Ballroom where over 250 works from the permanent collection are on display. Just around the corner in the IMU's Black Box Theater, the UIMA presents temporary exhibitions and related programming. Because of a lack of a physical building, events are hosted all around the Iowa City area. Click our logo to find one happening near you!
